What are index locks and what do I look for?
Index locks, or
register locks, are the devices that are responsible for ensuring that the screen
in each clamp comes down in exactly the same position every time around. A loose
or wiggly index lock spells disaster for multicolor jobs.
An
index lock should be adjustable, and should be designed in such a way that the
rigors of use over time do not damage the arms. Locks based on spring-loaded
balls are common in the industry, but they will, over time, groove the screen
arms. This grooving will lead to sloppiness and misregistration.
Teeshirtprinters.com
uses a better index locking system commonly found on much more expensive machines.
Fully adjustable nylon bolts lock the screen arm securely. The nylon acts as
a natural lubricant against the screen arm and as a result, the arm moves freely
yet stays secure. These inexpensive nylon bolts wear away over time, not the
screen arm. As they slowly erode, simply tighten them a quarter turn and re-tighten
the jam nut. Your press is now tight as when it was brand new!
